5th September Wroclaw to Krakow to Auschwitz.....

Early start ,taxi5.30am ,3 hr bus trip to Krakow and then another 1 hr and 45 mins to Auschwitz,10 hrs on the bus , nearly 4 hrs at the camps !

I am not complaining after the sadness I saw today!!!!

Translated " work makes you free"! What a load of bullshit!

The poor buggers were told they would have a new life after getting out of the ghettos in carriages that held 40-60 people with their luggage!

This carriage is an original on the railway line at Birkenau, turned into a sepia shot by Joel! On getting off the train onto platform they were classified as workers or others! The others turned right and went straight to the gas chambers which were bombed by the Germans just before the camps were liberated by the Russians!

Remains of gas chambers at Birkenhau

Picture of original gas chambers! Taken by a couple of German soldiers in camps who took photos so they could have them to look at for interest ! Whoah! Although now they are proof of what went on!

Endless thoughts!

Housing for prisoners,a lot of brick, wooden ones have gone only chimneys standing!

Actual wall where a lot of people were shot, most prisoners only lasted 3 to 6 months in the camps.

Bunks in brick buildings for inmates.

Courtyard where shootings took place!

Original gas chamber but wasn't quite large enough for the extermination so they built 4 other larger ones, scratch marks are noticeable on walls! Black sulphur marks from gas!

Ovens used to burn bodies, their ashes ended up as fertiliser on the farm lands!

Birkenhau entrance!

End of the line ?!

Well guys I could say so much more but the part of the day that brought me undone was the photographs of the children,I completely lost it!

  1. No wonder the locals don't smile, Jen! Yes, pictures tell a story, don't they? We went to a concentration camp in Austria at Mauthausen. Incredibly sad. You never forget it. Actually should be compulsory viewing to remind ourselves how lucky we are. Great blog. Go girl! Pam
